St. Mary Magdalen
The dove she holds is Christ. She is comforting and consoling him, but she cannot remove the thorn. It is not hers to remove. She must love Christ in his woundedness. Her salvation depends upon her acceptance of this sorrow, inflicted in part by her own hand, her own need of a Savior. She weeps for her own sinfulness and the light of mercy shines on her, while she herself becomes a vessel of mercy and compassion.
The dove, a mourning dove, is also her own heart. She cries not only the tears of a penitent, but also the tears of a lover in mourning. She holds in her own hand and seeks to comfort her own broken heart.
