Put out into deep water Original Watercolor 17.5" x 30.25"

Lk 5:4-10 Peter has just come to the end of a long, difficult and unfruitful day. He has washed his nets and finally reached the moment where he can rest. Instead, Christ sends Peter back out into the very thing he longed to turn away from. Out of love and obedience, Peter does what he is told and catches so many fish that his nets tear and the boat is in danger of sinking. In my spiritual life I too am continually told to go farther than I ever have before at the moments when it is most difficult for me, and like Peter, any risk I have taken for the sake of love has been rewarded beyond my imagining.
The depth of the water is the most significant part of the painting. I painted layer upon layer and after each layer told myself to go deeper yet. Christ speaks the words "Do not be afraid" in this passage, and I wanted to contrast the depths of our fears shown in the intensity of the color of the water with the great reward symbolized by the fish and received from being willing to enter such depths.
